Switzerland is small and its trains are excellent, which makes it the easiest European country to plan well. The best trips use two or three bases instead of a new hotel every night, and a Swiss Travel Pass so trains, buses and lake boats are already paid for.
The classic route
Lucerne is the first base: the wooden Chapel Bridge, a lake cruise, and day trips to Mt Titlis via Engelberg for snow, the glacier cave and the Cliff Walk, or Mt Pilatus by the steep cogwheel railway in summer.
Interlaken is the second base, between two lakes. From here the train climbs to Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe, with snow all year. Grindelwald First has cliff walks and summer activities, and Harder Kulm gives an evening view over Interlaken.
Lauterbrunnen, a short train ride from Interlaken, is a valley of waterfalls and quiet villages. With more days, add Zermatt for the Matterhorn and the Gornergrat railway, or the scenic Glacier Express between Zermatt and St. Moritz.
The Swiss Travel Pass
The pass covers most trains, buses, boats and many museums, and gives discounts on mountain railways and cable cars such as Jungfraujoch and Titlis. For a week of moving between bases it usually costs less than separate tickets, and it removes a lot of planning. We work out whether the pass suits your exact route.
Schengen visa
Indian passport holders need a Schengen visa for Switzerland. You apply with flight and hotel bookings, insurance, bank statements and a cover letter, usually through the visa centre in your city. Appointments get busy before summer, so start two to three months ahead. We prepare the bookings and the document checklist.
Food and budget
Try cheese fondue, raclette and rösti at least once. Switzerland is expensive, so many travellers keep lunch simple with supermarket picnics. Indian restaurants are found in Zurich, Lucerne and Interlaken, and vegetarian food is easy to find.
Best time to visit Switzerland
May to September is green, with long days, open mountain passes and hiking. Snow stays at the high viewpoints all year. December to March is for skiing and winter villages, while April and October to November are quieter shoulder months when some mountain lifts close for maintenance.

Switzerland trip questions
How many days are enough for Switzerland?
Six or seven nights covers Lucerne, Interlaken and the Jungfrau region. Ten days lets you add Zermatt or the Glacier Express.
Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?
Usually yes if you move between cities and take lake boats; we compare it with point-to-point tickets for your route.
Can I combine Switzerland with Paris?
Yes. Fast trains link Paris with Geneva and Zurich in about three to four hours, and both are covered by one Schengen visa.
