Kashmir is the trip most of our guests describe in one word: calm. The day starts with a shikara gliding past your houseboat window on Dal Lake and can end in a pine meadow in Pahalgam with nothing but the sound of the Lidder river. It suits honeymooners, families with grandparents and first-time snow seekers equally well, because the distances are short and the roads are good.
What a Kashmir trip feels like
Srinagar is the base. Spend one night on a carved cedar houseboat and the rest in a hotel, so you get the experience without giving up a proper bathroom for five days. Mornings are for the Mughal gardens, Nishat and Shalimar, laid out in terraces facing the lake. Evenings are for the floating market of vendors who paddle up to your shikara with saffron, kahwa and papier-mache.
From Srinagar, three valleys fan out. Gulmarg has the gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, which lifts you to Kongdoori and, on a clear day, to Apharwat. Pahalgam is greener and gentler, with Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari reached by local taxi. Sonmarg, on the road towards Ladakh, is where you walk or ride a pony up to the Thajiwas glacier.
Who Kashmir suits best
Honeymooners, families with grandparents and anyone who wants their first real snow. Drives are short, hotels are comfortable, and the pace can be as slow as you like. It is less suited to travellers who want nightlife.
Where to stay in Kashmir
Split the nights: one on a deluxe houseboat on Dal or Nigeen lake, the rest in a Srinagar hotel near the Boulevard. If you want snow mornings, add a night in Gulmarg; for river sounds and pine air, a night in Pahalgam near the Lidder. Honeymooners often pick a lake-facing heritage property, families a hotel with lifts and heating.
What to eat
Kashmiri food is a meal in itself. Try a wazwan, the multi-course feast with rogan josh, rista and gushtaba, or the vegetarian dum aloo and nadru yakhni made with lotus stem. Mornings start with girda bread from the local baker and noon chai, the pink salted tea; evenings end with sweet saffron kahwa.
Best time to visit Kashmir
Late March and April bring the tulip garden in Srinagar into bloom and the almond orchards into flower. May to August is green, pleasant and busiest. September and October turn the chinar trees red and gold, which many locals call the best season of all. December to February is for snow: Gulmarg becomes a ski slope, and some roads to Sonmarg can close after heavy snowfall.
Getting there
Most travellers fly into Srinagar, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai and several other cities. Trains now run all the way to Srinagar from Katra, a scenic option if you are combining the trip with Vaishno Devi.

Good to know before you go
- Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not work in Kashmir. Carry a postpaid number.
- Book the Gulmarg gondola online in advance in peak months; tickets sell out.
- Pahalgam and Gulmarg have their own taxi unions, so local sightseeing is in their cabs, not yours.
- Pack a light jacket even in June; evenings near the glaciers are cold.
Kashmir trip questions
Is a houseboat stay comfortable for families?
Yes, for a night or two. Better houseboats have heaters, attached bathrooms and hot water. We place families on deluxe boats closer to the shore.
Can we see snow in Kashmir in summer?
Yes, at the Thajiwas glacier in Sonmarg and on Apharwat at the top of the Gulmarg gondola, depending on the year's snowfall.
Is Kashmir safe for tourists right now?
Tourist areas like Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg see heavy visitor traffic every season. We follow local advisories closely and adjust plans if needed before and during your trip.
