Manali is the hill town that does a bit of everything. In one trip you can play in snow, paraglide over a valley, sit by the Beas with a book and eat wood-fired pizza in a cafe that plays old rock. It is also the easiest snow trip from north India, which is why it fills up fast in winter and over long weekends.
Two towns, one valley
New Manali, around Mall Road, is where most hotels, shops and taxi stands are. Old Manali, a short climb up, is quieter, with guesthouses, cafes and the Manu temple. We usually place families near Mall Road for convenience and couples in Old Manali or along the road to Vashisht, where the village has natural hot springs.
Most of the excitement is a drive away. Solang Valley has paragliding in the warmer months and skiing and snow scooters in winter. The Atal Tunnel, nine kilometres long, now takes you under the Rohtang range to Sissu in Lahaul in well under an hour, which means snow is reachable for much more of the year. Rohtang Pass itself needs a permit and is closed on some days, so we plan it only when it adds something.
Down the valley, Naggar has a stone-and-wood castle, the Roerich art gallery and views across to the Kullu side. Kasol and Manikaran in the Parvati valley make a good extra day for younger groups.
Who Manali suits best
Friends' groups, couples and families looking for an affordable snow trip from north India. Adventure seekers get paragliding, rafting and skiing; slower travellers get cafes and orchards.
Where to stay in Manali
For families, hotels around Mall Road and Log Huts Area keep you close to restaurants and taxis. Couples like the cottages and boutique stays in Old Manali, Vashisht or along the Naggar road, many with apple orchards and valley views. In winter, make sure the room has proper heating; many budget places only offer a heater on request.
What to eat
Himachali food deserves a try between the cafe pizzas. Look for siddu, a steamed bread stuffed with walnut or poppy seeds, trout from the Beas served grilled or fried, and the festive dham meal of rajma and rice. Old Manali's cafes are famous for wood-fired pizzas, Israeli plates and apple pie made with local fruit.
Best time to visit Manali
December to February brings regular snowfall to Solang and beyond, and very cold nights. March to June is pleasant, with clear days and snow still on the higher slopes. July and August are monsoon months with landslide risk on the highway. October and November are dry, golden and less crowded.

- Rent snow boots and jackets at Solang rather than carrying them from home.
- Pair Manali with Shimla or Kasol if you have more than five days.
Manali trip questions
Will we definitely see snow in Manali?
From December to February, almost always at Solang or Sissu. From March to May, usually at Sissu or higher points, depending on that year's snowfall.
Is it better to fly to Bhuntar?
Flights to Bhuntar are few and weather-dependent. Many guests fly to Chandigarh and drive about seven hours, or take the overnight bus from Delhi.
Is Manali good for a honeymoon?
Yes, especially from October to March. Choose a cottage stay away from Mall Road, add a snow day at Sissu and an evening in Old Manali.
