Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and the town still wears that history openly: a mock-Tudor church on the Ridge, a Gothic library, colonial cottages stacked down the slopes. It is the easiest hill station to reach from Delhi and Chandigarh, which makes it ideal for a long weekend or as the first stop on a longer Himachal trip.
Shimla beyond Mall Road
The Ridge and Mall Road are the heart of Shimla, a car-free stretch for walking, people-watching and buying woollens. Christ Church, the State Library and the old Gaiety Theatre all sit along it. A steep walk or a short ropeway ride takes you up to Jakhoo temple and its giant Hanuman statue, with views over the whole town.
The best part of Shimla is often outside it. Kufri, about 15 kilometres away, has snow in winter and pony rides to viewpoints. Mashobra and Naldehra are quiet, forested and good for a resort stay. Further up, Narkanda sits among apple orchards with views of snow peaks, and Hatu Peak above it has a small wooden temple and a forest road.
The Kalka-Shimla railway is a UNESCO-listed mountain line that winds through more than a hundred tunnels. The ride takes five to six hours, so it is about the journey, not speed. We usually suggest it one way and a road transfer the other.
Who Shimla suits best
Families, seniors and first-time hill travellers who want an easy, well-connected trip. It is also a good long weekend from Delhi, Chandigarh or Punjab, with or without the toy train.
Where to stay in Shimla
Heritage hotels around the Mall and Chaura Maidan put you within walking distance of everything, though some involve steep paths. For quiet and forest views, stay in Mashobra, Chharabra or Kufri, about half an hour away. Narkanda has a few cottage stays among orchards, ideal if you want snow in winter and complete calm.
What to eat
Lakkar Bazaar is the place for hot ram laddoos and chana, and the Mall has old bakeries and cafes that have been serving tea and patties for decades. For local flavour, try madra, a yoghurt-based chickpea curry, and babru, the Himachali kachori. Indian Coffee House on the Mall is a Shimla institution for coffee and dosa.
Best time to visit Shimla
March to June is pleasant and busy, perfect for escaping the plains. July and August bring monsoon mist and occasional landslides. October and November are clear and crisp. December to February is cold, with a chance of snow in Shimla itself and a much better chance in Kufri and Narkanda.

Good to know before you go
- Book toy train seats as early as the railway allows; the first-class and vistadome coaches fill fast.
- Cars cannot drive on Mall Road; choose a hotel with an easy walk or lift access if travelling with seniors.
- Combine Shimla with Manali for a classic 7- to 8-day Himachal circuit.
Shimla trip questions
Is Shimla good for a winter snow trip?
Yes, especially if you stay a night in Kufri or Narkanda, where snow is more reliable than in Shimla town.
How far is Shimla from Delhi?
About 340 km, roughly eight hours by road. Many travellers take a train to Kalka or fly to Chandigarh and drive the last three to four hours.
Is Shimla too crowded in summer?
May and June weekends are busy. Stay in Mashobra or Narkanda instead of Mall Road, and do the town's sights early in the morning.
