Darjeeling is tea, toy trains and the third-highest mountain on earth filling the horizon at dawn. The town clings to a ridge with colonial buildings, Tibetan monasteries and steep lanes full of momo shops. Mornings are cold and clear, afternoons misty, and a cup of first-flush tea at the source is reason enough to come.
Mountains, trains and tea
The early start to Tiger Hill is worth it. As the sun rises behind you, the snow face of Kanchenjunga turns pink, then gold, with Everest visible as a small peak on very clear days. On the way back, stop at Ghum monastery and the Batasia loop, where the toy train spirals around a war memorial and garden.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage line, running since 1881. The full route from New Jalpaiguri is long; most visitors take the two-hour joyride from Darjeeling to Ghum and back on a steam or diesel engine.
Tea estates surround the town. Happy Valley, one of the oldest, offers factory tours in season, and several estates run tastings where you learn the difference between first and second flush. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded after Tenzing Norgay's Everest climb, sits beside the Padmaja Naidu zoo, known for red pandas and snow leopards.
Who Darjeeling suits best
Families, couples, tea lovers and anyone wanting mountain views without trekking. It pairs naturally with Sikkim for travellers with more than four days.
Where to stay in Darjeeling
Hotels near the Mall and Chowrasta keep you close to cafes and the toy train station, but ask for a room facing Kanchenjunga. For a special stay, several tea estates run colonial bungalows where you can wake up among the bushes. In winter, make sure your hotel has room heating; old buildings can be cold.
What to eat
Darjeeling's food is a mix of Tibetan, Nepali and Bengali. Try momos and thukpa, sha phaley, a deep-fried meat bread, and Nepali thali with gundruk. Glenary's on the Mall and Keventer's are old institutions for breakfast and pastries. Most of all, taste the teas: first flush is light and floral, second flush richer and muscatel.
Best time to visit Darjeeling
March to May brings rhododendrons and pleasant days. October to December has the clearest mountain views. The monsoon, from June to September, is wet and misty, with landslides on the roads. January and February are cold but often clear.

Darjeeling trip questions
Is Kanchenjunga always visible?
No, clouds often hide it, especially in the monsoon. October to December gives the best odds, and two mornings in town improve your chances.
Darjeeling or Gangtok?
Darjeeling for colonial charm, tea and the toy train; Gangtok for Tsomgo Lake and North Sikkim. Most guests do both.
How do we reach Darjeeling?
Fly to Bagdogra or take a train to New Jalpaiguri, then drive about three hours up the hills. Shared jeeps and private cabs both run the route.
