Coorg, or Kodagu, is coffee country in the Western Ghats: misty hills, spice-scented estates and old bungalows where breakfast comes with your host's own filter coffee. It is the go-to weekend escape from Bengaluru and Mysuru, and a favourite with couples and families who want greenery and quiet more than a sightseeing checklist.
Slow days in coffee country
The best way to experience Coorg is to stay on an estate. Homestays and plantation resorts sit among coffee, pepper and cardamom, and many hosts will walk you through the estate, explaining how the beans are picked, dried and roasted. Evenings are for bonfires and the region's cooking, especially pandi curry with kadambuttu, steamed rice balls.
Madikeri is the small hill town at the centre. Raja's Seat, a garden on the edge of a cliff, is the place for sunset over the valleys. Abbey Falls, a short walk through coffee plantations, is at its most powerful after the monsoon. Talacauvery, on a hilltop, is where the Kaveri river begins.
On the eastern side, Dubare elephant camp lets you watch elephants being bathed in the river in the morning, and you can raft nearby in season. Close by, Bylakuppe is one of the largest Tibetan settlements in India, and its Namdroling monastery, the Golden Temple, is a striking, peaceful place to visit.
Who Coorg suits best
Couples, families and friends who want greenery, coffee and calm rather than sightseeing. It is a natural weekend escape from Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru.
Where to stay in Coorg
Estate homestays are the heart of a Coorg holiday, run by Kodava families who often cook for guests. For more facilities, plantation resorts near Madikeri, Virajpet and Siddapur offer pools, spas and guided walks. If you are visiting Dubare and the Golden Temple, staying on the Kushalnagar side shortens the drives.
What to eat
Kodava cuisine is distinct and bold. Pandi curry, pork cooked with kachampuli vinegar, is the signature dish, served with kadambuttu or akki roti. Vegetarians can try bamboo shoot curry and mushroom dishes in season. Pick up Coorg coffee, honey, pepper, cardamom and the local fruit wines before you leave.
Best time to visit Coorg
October to March is pleasant and dry, with coffee blossoms adding fragrance in late February and March. April and May are warmer but still fine. June to September is the monsoon, with very heavy rain, leeches on trails and spectacular waterfalls.
